Purchased by Jack and Maxine Zarrow from Brummett Echohawk, Tulsa, OK, July 8, 1980. On the stretcher: "James Bigheart 1838 - 1908; Full blood Osage; Born in St Paul, Kansas, then an Osage village. Buried near now Barnsdall, Okla. (previously Bigheart, Okla.) Chief James Bigheart - led in organizing the Osage Nation under a written constitution. Pun-kah-wi-tah-An-Kah Known as 'Big Jim' called 'Moses of the Osages' for his role in preserving the mineral rights in common for the 2229 tribal members. First elected principal Chief in 1882 - Osage Nation comprises 1,476,539 acres. Served his people as their leader or Chief from 1875-1900. Negotiated and signed the first blanket oil and gas sale in 1896 - Fathered the 'headright' system. 14"
