Description:
A painting of two couples, each consisting of a man and a woman, seated on either side of a fire built on a Native American church altar with a peyote bud also on the altar. For each couple, the woman is in the foreground. The man is in the background but slightly nearer to the fire than the woman. The woman on the left is wearing a red shawl, and the man next to her is wrapped in a black blanket. Their heads are bowed, and they are each holding a beaded feather fan in their left hand. The woman on the right is wrapped in a black blanket, her head is bowed, and she is holding a beaded feather fan. The man on the right is wearing a buckskin shirt and is wrapped in a red blanket. His head is raised, and his hands are outstretched. He is holding a ceremonial rattle, a staff and a fan in his left hand. A peyote bud and three water birds are in the sky above the smoke from the fire.

Provenance:
Purchased by Jack and Maxine Zarrow at the Art Market's "Sale of Important Art," which was held March 7-21, 1991. This painting was one of six purchased at this sale. The others were by R. Hood, R. Chee, J. D. Roybal, R. Naha, and M. Lomakema. Previously, this painting was given to Jeanne Snodgrass (King) by Al Momaday while she was working at Philbrook Museum, Tulsa, OK. She later sold it to Native American art collector Jack Wilson of Tulsa, OK. When he broke up his collection, he sold the painting at the Art Market's Sale of Important Art in 1991, where it was purchased by the Zarrows. On the dust cover: "'Peyote Ceremony' by Al Momaday." On the sticker: "Al Momaday; 'Peyote Ceremony' 19 1/2" X 25" tempera."
