Purchased by Jack and Maxine Zarrow at an antique store in downtown Tahlequah, OK, circa 1996. The proprietor believed it to be a self-portrait by Thomas Hart Benton, in part because the drawing came from Kansas City. The Zarrows did not think it was by Benton and wanted to have it authenticated. They offered the woman half of what she was asking for the drawing and agreed to pay the balance if it was by Benton. The staff at The Gilcrease Museum examined it and determined it was a drawing of Benton done by Cherokee artist, George M. Cochran.
